Beautiful Noise Ltd is the brainchild of former Reverb Music and XL Talent Partnership creative director Gordon Charlton, who formed the company to release his favourite music, manage producers and consult to anyone willing to pay him.
Gordon asked me to design a vibrant and eye-catching identity which was then used on various stationery items.

Access To Music is the UK’s largest provider of educational popular music courses. Their aim is to provide diverse, inclusive and high-quality training opportunities for people who are interested in working in the music industry.
Mono Industries was asked to art direct and design the ATM Prospectus for 2004/2005. Studio based black and white photography was art directed by M.I. and shot by photographer Charlie Gray.

In late Summer 2008 I was asked to tender for a very interesting project at my local NHS hospital.
A very very long corridor which linked the main public area of the hospital and the maternity unit was being re-decorated and it was proposed that 22 large exhibition panels showing the entire history of the facility be designed and produced and hung along the length of the space.
I was lucky enough to win the pitch and set about sourcing images for the project and designing the panels. I worked very closely with all the stakeholders to produce 22 large panels which told the story of the hospital, from its humble beginnings, to the present day as a major international teaching hospital.

Alasdair Cant & Associates are a Cambridge based training consultancy specialising in mentoring and coaching. I’ve worked with Alasdair & Helen for many years. I designed and built their logo, put together their stationery and designed and built them a website which saw them make the move online for the first time.
They required a simple yet stylish site that they could update and manage themselves. The site has bought them terrific results in a relatively short amount of time.

For the third year running, Mono Industries was asked to develop ideas for the Arts Council’s Creative Careers Fairs.
As well as developing a visual identity for the project, striking vector images were used to portray two specific ideas: thinking out of the box and standing out from the crowd. Posters, leaflets, flyers and carrier bags were produced to communicate these messages to the target audience of 18-25 year olds.
We were also asked to design and develop a website for the fairs which included building a bespoke content management system.

bmg classical division
BMG Music Publishing is one of the largest music publishers in the world. They publish works by artists such as Coldplay, Paul Weller and The Who.
Their classical division BMG/Ricordi asked Mono Industries to design a brochure for Chinease born Australian Liza Lim. The design for Liza’s brochure went down so well that other BMG/Ricordi Artists wanted their own version. Jonathan Cole was next, swiftly followed by Dai Fujikura.

Mono Industries was asked to design this marketing brochure for the British Arts Festivals Association. The brochure was produced to advertise the association’s 2005 annual conference entitled ‘Festivals & Regeneration’.
A great image of the conference venue, The Sage in Gateshead, was used on the front of the brochure.

Organisers of the Bury St Edmunds Festival invited Mono Industries to come up with some fresh ideas for the front cover of their 2005 festival programme. A somewhat radical approach was taken at the request of the festival team and this is what we came up with – a fresh, vibrant, colourful and eye-catching solution.
I’ve since designed the festival brochure front covers for 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Cambridge Economic Policy Associates (CEPA) is an economic and financial policy advisory business. Working in association with the University of Cambridge, it provides policy advice on the appropriate role of markets and private capital in economic development.
I was asked to brand the organisation as well as design a launch folder and brochure.

Mono Industries was asked to design and implement a website for food wholesaler The Cambridge Food Company.
Using the client’s idea of ‘Get Food’, we designed and built not only a great looking website but also a bespoke Content Management System that lets the client add, edit and delete all their own content.

Charlie Irvine is one of Scotland’s most experienced mediators. A specialist in workplace and employment mediation, his practice also includes family, education, health and local authority mediation.
Charlie asked me to design and build a simple identity to use as his practice expands.

Darsham Nurseries (plants, not children), is a beautiful nursery in Suffolk run by plantsman David Keleel.
David asked me to design an identity that could be used in many different ways: business stationery, signage & vehicle livery.
I used a photograph of the landscape as inspiration for the logo and re-drew it in a very simple way.

Working with friends can sometimes be a little tricky but not with photographer Debby Besford.
She required a website that was simple to use and perhaps more importantly, simple to maintain.
Once the site had gone live, I took elements of its design to provide her with some very elegant stationery.

Gusto Arts Management and Consultancy provides project management, advice, training and group facilitation for clients in the arts sector.
Mono Industries was asked to develop an identity which had a bit of a European flavour. We’re currently working on a Gusto website.

Hoipolloi Theatre Company creates and tours entertaining, accessible and popular new theatre for a broad audience at a wide range of venues nationally and internationally.
Mono Industries has worked with the company on publicity for two shows – ‘The Man Next Door’ and ‘My Uncle Arly’, which was performed throughout August 2003 at the Assembly Rooms at the Edinburgh Festival. A full UK tour took place in the Autumn of 2004.
A new logo and accompanying stationery was introduced in early Summer 2004.

Having worked with Sarah at her two previous employers, I had a good idea of what she wanted when she decided to set up her own business: contemporary but not trendy, smart but not fashionable.
The starting point was an identity followed by a stationery set and website with an accompanying content management system.
The website needed to have lots of embedded audio and video content built in, so I needed to make sure that Sarah was able to manage this easily via the CMS.

Menagerie Theatre Company asked Mono Industries to design the publicity for a production entitled ‘Gaugleprixtown’ which ran at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2005.
I also designed some great print for a new play by Steve Waters entitled ‘Clare’s Walk’ which was about an imaginary journey from London to the Fens in search of the poet John Clare.
M.I. also designed the first version of the Menagerie website.

Momentum Arts aims to advance the skills, knowledge and creativity of groups and individuals in East England. It does this through training, action-research and consultation.
Current projects include Being Here, an arts-led regeneration programme based in Southend and Untold Stories, a Cambridge-based project which aims to discover and promote the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
A show by Austrian dancer Willi Dorner entitled ‘Mazy’, was a Momentum Arts promoted tour which took place in the Autumn of 2000. Mono Industries designed all the publicity for the tour and made use of some great photography which was supplied by the company.
I was also asked to design a logotype for the Cross Currents project which was to be used across all media. This was a collaborative project between the Momentum Arts Diversity Programme and Decibel – the Arts Council’s Cultural Diversity initiative.
The Being Here Now leaflet and subsequent brochure needed to fulfill two main criteria: to appeal to young people and to be as accessible as possible to people with disabilities. It scored on both counts and has even been used as an example of good accessibility practice.

British/Czech theatre company NIE [New International Encounter] commissioned Mono Industries to design the publicity for a show that was performed at the 2004 Edinburgh Festival. The show entitled My Long Journey Home, which has been performed over 200 times in 9 countries, made its UK debut at the Pleasance Theatre in August.
The show then went on to Battersea Arts Centre for which I designed a post card which incorporated photography from the Edinburgh run. The company then invited me to re-brand them, starting with a new visual identity which once finalised, was used on various new stationery items.
In early Summer 2005 I started work on publicity for the company’s new show The End Of Everything Ever. A2, A3 and A5 publicity material was designed using images shot in the Czech Republic earlier in the year.
In January 2007 I started work on the publicity for a new show entitled ‘My Life With The Dogs’. A new ‘punky’ style was adopted for this particular production.
The company’s website which I also designed and developed is about to go through a phase of re-structuring which will incorporate some of the latest social media tools.

The benefits of designing an identity and signage for clients that are in the same neighbourhood as you are fairly obvious. The downside is that if it goes wrong, you have to walk past your work every day.
Fortunately for client and designer, it turned out great and every time I walk past the Norfolk Street Deli (at least twice a day, if not more), it brings a smile to my face.
Great coffee too.

Parenting People run courses and give support and guidance to Mums and Dads.
Mono Industries was asked to brand the organisation, including designing postcards featuring an illustration by the Australian illustrator Michael Leunig. I also designed and built the company’s website which brought in new business almost immediately and has since had some great feedback.

Designing an identity and website for a bomb disposal company was a little bit daunting at first but having spent a lot of time with Danny and his team, it became clear what was required.
In essence, Planit International are an environmental company, going in and clearing up other people’s mess – in their case, unexploded ordnance.
Easily one of my favourite ever projects.

Being a bit of a geek myself, I was thrilled when telecoms startup StarLeaf contacted me about designing an identity and website for them.
They were so easy to work with and full of ideas. It was also nice to work with a client who was as interested in the tiny details as I was.
I’m looking forward to being able to work with them again in the future.

Youth Dance England is a national agency for young people interested in dance, promoting and supporting young people’s participation.
YDE asked me to design a PDF brochure about making a career in the dance world. The brochure carried information about the many different careers available to dance practitioners as well as case studies and a glossary.
The brochure is available as a free download from the YDE website.
